The Xeon E3-1200 v2 has four cores, just like its predecessor, but is available in a two-core, low-voltage variant that has a thermal design point of only 17 watts, if having the absolute lowest power possible per socket is what matters to you. Like other Ivy Bridge chips, these Xeon E3-1200 v2 chips have 32KB of L1 instruction cache, 32KB of L1 data cache, and 256KB of L2 cache per core. The processor also has has 8MB of on-chip L3 cache memory, which is knocked down to 3MB on the power-sipping 17 watt model.
Who buys Xeon E3 V2 Server CPUs?
The processors also support Turbo Boost, which allows for clock speeds to be cranked up if some of the cores are deactivated or other components on the processor are not being exercised aggressively. The Xeon E3-1200 v3 processors run at between 2.5GHz and 4.1GHz and generally speaking give as much as a 400MHz boost in turbo mode.
The big exception to this rule is the E3-1220L v2 chip, which is the two-core 17 watt part that runs at 2.3GHz normally but which can boost its clock speed by 1.2GHz to 3.5GHz under the right circumstances and still stay in its thermal envelope. At $189 a pop for server makers that buy them in 1,000-unit trays, more than a few customers are probably going to overclock this puppy instead of buying a more powerful and core-laden version of the Xeon E3 v2 family. This is the only Xeon E3 v2 chip that doesn’t have 8MB of L3 cache it has only 3MB so this CPU might not be suitable for cache-sensitive workloads. (Cutting back the cache and clock speeds is how Intel is able to get the wattage so low on this E3-1220L v2.)
The Xeon E3-1200 v3 chips also support the AES-NI encryption instructions that debuted with selected models of the “Westmere” Xeon processors the instructions were carried forward into the Sandy Bridge Xeons and now the Ivy Bridge Xeons.
