Sell Hard Drives (HDD’s) and Solid State Drives (SSDs)
Hard drives often have sensitive data on them, only sell them to a company you trust! We are R2 certified to wipe hard drives, and our process is internally and third party audited (reports available upon request). We adhere to the National Institute of Standards and Technologies guidelines on erasure and verification. Chain of custody, secure storage, and serialized reporting is included. We make it easy to sell hard drives.
Get a Quote for your Excess Hard Drives
How much are your old hard drives worth? Call, chat, or e-mail to find out now (Blue bar at the very top). We just need the model number on server drives, or the specifications on desktop/laptop drives. We have a price sheet on hand you can just fill quantities in to get a total. We can quote erasure as well.
Shipping, Packing, and Logistics
Do not damage the hard drives! They are sensitive to harsh movement, or scratches through improper packing or storage. It is important to separate the hard drives; they should not rub or touch one another. We can send hard drives boxes free of charge (providing we get them back with working drives). To ship us the product, provide the weights and dimensions and we will issue a prepaid shipping label with full insurance. If need be, we can send palletizing instructions and dispatch a truck to pick up the freight.
Get Paid for your used Hard Drives
Within 7 business days of receiving the product, we issue an itemized report of product received, tested good, and failed. Serialized certificates of data destruction are available upon request. Upon your approval, we issue a company check to the name and address on the purchase order.
While solid state drives are still more prized in the IT market, hard drives will have a place in data centers and IT remarketing programs for years to come. When anyone goes to sell hard drives, it’s very likely that some of them will be HDDs even years from now. It’s simply very cheap to house a large quantity of data with hard disk drives. While the input and output is much slower with Hard disk drives than SSDs, per dollar you get more storage capacity, and that discrepancy is too large to disappear in the near future.
With data that isn’t necessarily very important, but still needs to be kept on site, hard drives provide an appealing option. In the world of asset recovery, they don’t bring significant returns in small quantities, but typically a data center will sell hard drives in bulk, and when you sell hard drives of the newer variety, especially ones with larger capacity, you can certainly expect significant returns. This is especially true when partnering with an experienced IT vendor.

SSD Data Erasure
SSDs require a different data erasure process than HDDs do. Instead of data being written to physical points through different bit polarities, data is stored using electrons themselves. Software tools can erase SSD data by releasing the electrons from storage cells. However, these software tools can’t reach every storage area on the SSD. This leaves behind data on the service areas of the SSD. To wipe data off of an SSD at the hardware level, we’ll use an ATA Secure Erase command to restore the drive to factory default and write performance.
In terms of durability, SSDs have no moving parts. In an earthquake, or during shipping after you sell solid state drives, there is less risk of damage to the drives. A hard drive will usually park its read and write head while it’s off. However, while a hard drive is running, it will usually be moving over the platter just nanometers away. One bump could smash the head and platter together. Packing must be a very thorough process to ensure maximum returns on your IT investment.
When you sell solid state drives and hard drives, the precious data they house is always a concern. With everything from Yahoo to Arbys to Blue Cross/Blue shield experiencing data breaches, nobody can be lax with their data security. To that end, many companies don’t sell hard drives. They see it as too great a risk for anyone to touch their secondhand equipment. The reality is, an R2 certified corporation is trusted by even critical government branches with their data. A single pass overwrite is widely accepted by even very conscientious corporations as equivalent to destruction of the asset in terms of data security. If you sell hard drives directly to an established company with R2 certification, you’ve taken every precaution for the security of your data.
Keys to Sell drives
If time is your main consideration, then you may want to sell your hard drives to a company that deals in bulk. You’ll likely not get as large of a return when you sell hard drives to companies like that, as they’ll expect wholesale pricing, and will want to make a profit off of remarketing them on the secondary market most likely. Alternatively, you could sell hard drives yourself on the secondary market, going through platforms like Ebay to find individual buyers to maximize returns. However, this is very time consuming. With either of these options, You’re also likely going to need to wipe the hard drives yourself before you sell them, as there is no guarantee of data security when you sell hard drives in the secondary IT market.
An ITAD specialist can alleviate many of the cons of selling hard drives yourself. But not all ITAD vendors are created equal. Due to our massive network of contacts in the secondary market, we can afford to purchase your equipment for close to what you would get yourself if you went through the hassle of putting up listings and making calls yourself to find buyers.
However, the difference is, a reputable ITAD company with data erasure certification like R2 Exit Technologies can give you a guarantee that data security isn’t an issue. Additionally, you’re not lifting a finger, and we even cover shipping and insurance on the equipment.
The choice is a no-brainer.

Servers, storage, networking, processors, and memory. If we find it in the box, we’ll just add it to the receiving report and your check. (We don’t keep the extra’s without compensating you for it, we paid an extra $2,000 in June 2016 for extra product a client didn’t know they sent).
