Three Things to Consider for your Next Cloud Migration
If you blink you may have missed it! The exponential growth of cloud computing, but the amazingly fast growth just scratches the surface. According to a January 2015 study by RightScale, 88% of enterprises use the public cloud in some form, but 68% of respondents admitted that less than one-fifth of their app portfolios currently run in the cloud. Over half of the companies polled (55%) reported that an additional 20% or more of their application portfolios are cloud-ready, but remain undeployed to cloud architectures. It’s likely that many companies will be doing additional cloud migrations soon – likely yours will too. In your excitement to move into the virtual, don’t forget a decommissioning IT equipment plan for the physical equipment that you leave behind.
Remarket your Decommissioning IT equipment
If you currently own your IT equipment you will need to figure out what it’s worth. Keep in mind that what it’s worth today is drastically less then what you paid for it even six months ago. Find a partner who can assist you in getting to know the true market value. Once you know what the real value of your IT equipment is you will need to find a buyer. It may sound easy but finding the right buyer at the right time who will pay the most for your IT equipment is more of a science! Also not all of your decommissioned IT equipment is going to be worth reselling. Knowing when to recycle instead of resell and how to recycle in accordance with regulations will save you a lot of wasted time and effort, and legal problems. Protect your Sensitive Data & Brand
Data security is one of the most important considerations when beginning cloud Migration because your decommissioned IT equipment still holds all of your sensitive data! Even if you lease the decommissioned IT equipment you must do something to clean the data because you will send the IT equipment back to the leasing company and eventually all of it will end up in someone else’s hands. This makes it essential that you sanitize the IT equipment before it leaves your control. Never rely on your leasing company to cleanup for you. Once the IT equipment is no longer in operation we recommend using a tool that is independently certified and thoroughly sanitize all of your data.
Manage your Time
If your knee deep into the cloud migration then you already know you have almost no time for anything else! Even if you prepared down to the most minute detail before the cloud migration your hands will be full for some time. So where are you going to pull the time needed for remarketing your decommissioned IT equipment from? Unfortunately it usually takes about 25% of the time your cloud migration takes to remarket your decommissioned IT equipment and most of the time companies don’t allocate that time into the project allotment. Usually that means you need to “steal” time from another project, work overtime or just not do it right because you didn’t have the time. Too often decommissioning IT equipment is an afterthought that will waste money or compromise your data. Don’t let that happen to you!
