End of life typically refers to two different aspects of Operating System (OS) support. The end of mainstream support, and the end of extended support.

Microsoft usually ends mainstream support five years after the operating system is released, transitioning into
Extended support means that Microsoft is still releasing security updates and bug fixes, but not the other features of mainstream support. On paper this means your systems should still be secure under extended support.
“End of life” typically refers to the end of extended support. Windows Server 2012 end of life means that Microsoft will no longer improve the product, accept warranty claims, or provide patches or fixes of any kind.
When Should I Upgrade from Windows Server 2012?
If you need your systems to be under warranty and be continually updated through mainstream support, then you should switch to the newest OS after the end of mainstream support in October 9th, 2018.
Othewise, you absolutely need to upgrade your systems by October 10, 2023. We recommend you begin the process 6 months before that. These are the new dates after Microsoft extended their Windows Server OS support
Why the End of Extended Support for Windows Server 2012 Needs to be the Real End
Data security is a top priority for data centers. As a result, a lack of bug fixes or security updates for data center equipment is a deal breaker. Problems like this need to be avoided before they are given an opportunity to develop.
After End of Life, the creator no longer provides anything new for the product. This means that any bug fixes or features cease to be released. It also means that new vulnerabilities or holes in security will be left open to attack without a software update to remedy the weaknesses.
A security breach that cannot be resolved and could have been prevented is not a good option for any data center or data center manager.
What to do Before the Windows Server 2012 Extended Support Ends in 2023
The first order of business is to upgrade to a new operating system. You may consider an infrastructure update to take advantage of new virtualization features in modern operating systems.
An infrastructure update is no small task, so starting as soon as possible is of the utmost importance to make sure proper planning and execution takes place. As of this writing October 10, 2023 is still over 5 years away.
There is a lot of planning that needs to take place before doing an infrastructure update properly. Time should be allotted for inevitable troubleshooting and delays. With such a big and complicated process at least a few small things will inevitably not go as planned and cause holdups.
If you are considering waiting until the last minute to update your 2012 Windows Servers we highly recommend leaving 6 months of leeway between your projected finish date and October 10, 2023. Your data and security are too important to put at that kind of risk.
